What Typical Food Should You Try if You’re in Guatemala?

We have so many dishes in Guatemala that it’s difficult to name them all, but today we’ll specifically talk about corn-based foods because this month we are celebrating the National Corn Day, which is Guatemala’s natural and cultural heritage, celebrated every August 13th. So, here we’ll mention 5 of the most famous dishes we have!

  1. Tortillas: Tortillas are the daily staple food of Guatemalans, and it is customary in Guatemala for them to accompany every meal. Tortillas are made of corn and water and are classified as: white, yellow, black, red and pinto. The “pinto” tortilla has different colored grains on the cob due to cross-pollination, that’s why tortillas come in different colors. So don’t miss the opportunity to try the tortillas when you are in Guatemala. You can buy them at 3 for one quetzal and you will always find them wherever you are.
  2. Atol de elote: Atol de elote is an exquisite drink, made from corn, and for the Mayas it was a sacred drink that was consumed in various ceremonies. Nowadays, Guatemalans consume it on Sunday afternoons, since this is the day when families get together. You can buy atol de elote in the municipal markets, and if you are in Antigua Guatemala or in tourist places, it is almost always found in street stalls in the parks.
  3. Tamalitos: Tamalitos are a typical food in Guatemalan homes, served in a variety of ways. They are made of corn and are accompanied by tomato sauce, parsley and cheese. Tamalitos, like atol de elote, can be found in street stalls inside parks.
  4. Tostadas: Tostadas are thin corn tortillas that are toasted and usually accompanied by different ingredients like avocado, beans, diced vegetables, meat, and tomato sauce. But you can also enjoy them on their own with any type of meal, and you can buy them in packages at supermarkets.
  5. Elotes: Corn on the cob is commonly consumed by Guatemalans during the rainy season from May to October. Boiled or grilled corn is usually eaten with lemon and salt, but you can also have them as “elotes locos,” served with mayonnaise, tomato sauce, mustard, and hot sauce.
