Over the years, our Spanish program for children has continued to evolve. As more and more families began visiting Antigua Guatemala with children as young as four years old, we saw an increasing interest in creating an experience where children could truly immerse themselves in both the Spanish language and Guatemalan culture.

Children learn differently from adults. They are naturally curious, energetic, and eager to explore, which is why our classes are designed to keep them actively involved.

Our lessons combine personalized Spanish instruction with dynamic activities that encourage children to learn by doing. Depending on their age, level, and interests, students may participate in:

• Theater and role-playing – Children act out stories and everyday situations while practicing vocabulary, expressions, and conversation.
• A Spanish-language market – Students can practice buying and selling food, asking questions, using numbers, and interacting with others in Spanish.
• Creative activities and games – Art, crafts, and interactive games give children opportunities to learn new vocabulary while expressing their creativity.
• Cultural and cooking activities – Children can discover Guatemalan traditions and foods while learning the Spanish words and expressions connected to them.

These activities turn Spanish into something children can see, touch, experience, and use, rather than simply something they study.

One-on-One Classes with Opportunities to Interact

Our children’s program maintains the personalized one-on-one class structure that Ixchel is known for. This allows teachers to adapt lessons to each child’s age, Spanish level, personality, interests, and learning goals.

At the same time, we understand that children benefit enormously from interacting with other children.

For this reason, we encourage group activities and shared experiences throughout the week. Children may have their individual lessons with their teacher and then come together with other young students for games, cultural activities, theater, markets, and other interactive experiences.

This combination gives children the best of both worlds: individual attention and the opportunity to use Spanish socially.

Families Learning Together

One of the things we love most about our family programs is seeing parents and children experience Guatemala together.

Many parents choose to study Spanish at Ixchel at the same time as their children. While parents attend their own one-on-one Spanish lessons, their children participate in their own age-appropriate classes and activities.

This allows the entire family to have a shared experience while still having a program adapted to each person’s needs.

For younger children, especially those under five, it is completely normal for a parent to stay with them during the first hour. This can help children become familiar with their teacher, the school, and the new environment.

Once they feel comfortable, many children are happy to continue participating independently.

More Than Spanish: An Immersion Experience

For families who travel to Guatemala, learning Spanish is often only one part of the experience. Parents also want their children to discover a different culture, meet new people, and experience something outside their usual environment.

That is why our children’s program incorporates Guatemalan culture into the learning experience.

Children can learn about traditional foods, local customs, Guatemalan history, and everyday life while practicing Spanish. Activities such as preparing traditional recipes, visiting local places, playing a market, or learning through stories help children understand that language and culture are deeply connected.

Instead of simply learning the word tortilla, for example, a child can learn about tortillas by making them, talking about them, and sharing them with other students.

That is what immersion means to us.

Growing with Our Students

Our Spanish for Kids program has changed significantly over the years, and we are proud of how much it has grown.

What began as a need to accommodate more families traveling with children has developed into one of the most popular programs at Ixchel. Each year, we learn from our students, listen to families, and find new ways to make our classes more engaging and meaningful.

Today, we welcome children from around the world, including many first-time Spanish learners. Some arrive knowing only a few words, while others already have experience with the language. Regardless of their level, our goal is the same: to help children feel comfortable using Spanish and to make learning a positive experience they will remember.
